Since arriving down under from South Africa over a decade ago, Shadow has been making plenty of noise from Australia’s most isolated city. Alongside his DJ Bace Kadet and the rest of the like-minded rhymers in OD Clan, Shadow has been consistently putting Perth on the map, which makes the title of his latest single ‘My City’ all the more appropriate. Fans listening to the track may recognise some of the bars on show, which Shadow flexed on the last Fully Gassed cypher that dropped back in March. Still, while we may have already heard some of Shadow’s hard-headed threats and punchlines before, it still feels exciting in studio quality, with a murky instrumental lingering throughout. Those who’ve heard Shadow before already know what to expect: Clean, tightly-wound vocals and an impeccable sense of timing, all of which is shown in concise fashion on ‘My City’.

The track is taken from Shadow’s forthcoming Cream EP, due for release this August through Golden Era Records, the stable established by longtime veterans Hilltop Hoods. It makes sense then that Shadow was hand-picked to support the trio on their colossal national tour, also hitting expansive arenas in August. Having established himself as an underground ruler for several years, the Hilltop Hoods tour will be a chance for Shadow to disperse his music in a more mainstream setting, and we have no doubts that those arena audiences will lap it up wholeheartedly. With two tracks from the Cream EP now unleashed onto the Internet and a tour on the horizon, 2019 might just be the year that Shadow becomes Australia’s next breakout emcee:
