Started in Year
based in Sydney whose beautifully poised and deeply evocative storytelling is enriching the waters of neo-soul and pushing the boundaries of pop music.
Her expressive and intricate melodies invite listeners on a journey through the underworld. Enigmatic, mysterious and evocative in her lyricism and storytelling, OKENYO, emerges from the pack as a uniquely charismatic artist, part of a new generation of powerful women set to make their mark. Described by HAPPY as “a modern-day Cleopatra, exuberant with confidence, grace and a fierce sense of style and attitude”.
Making her mark with the wry and colourful ‘Just A Story’ last year, OKENYO began to turn heads both here and Internationally, premiering on HUNGER TV (UK), describing OKENYO as “Equal parts Frank Ocean, Grace Jones and M.I.A.”
The song has a unique energy and a captivating chorus that drags the listener from the start, however the real focus point is OKENYO’s bewitching voice – both in ability and attitude it is unmatched in Australian Music. A tongue-in-cheek comment on being suffocated by another’s desire and the rituals of relationships, the video clip turned heads further still, premiered by CLASH MAGAZINE (UK), “There’s something special here. There’s a flavour to the vocal, a bite to the songwriting which belies her tender years, with Okenyo betraying enormous confidence.”
Playing shows around the nation, OKENYO was invited abroad to perform at the reputable CMJ Festival in NYC, where she was placed in the Top 9 live International Acts by BrightYoungThings, as well as Splendour In The Grass 2015 with the Red Bull Academy
OKENYO reemerged in early 2016, as a guest vocalist and co-writer on the catchy and colourful Urthboy single ‘Second Heartbeat’ along with fellow emerging female artist Sampa The Great. Described by The Telegraph’s Kathy McCabe as “a rising star”, OKENYO’s skills as a writer and a vocalist were unmissable and the song quickly climbed to the top of the singles list for triple j, AU REVIEW and PROJECT U.
