Description

Layla – solo female artist and member of Syllaboliks (SBX) Crew from Perth, released her debut Influential album in 2005 on Obese Records which inspired many more female emcees.
Layla – ‘Maverick’
Dazza at it again on the boards with those blasting drums that became a staple in the early 2000s for our whole scene. Layla was one of the first MCs in heard in Australia that REEEEEALLY showed you what delivery was on the mic AND on the stage. One of the best rappers in Australia by a long stretch. – Funkoars

Appeared on Culture of Kings Vol. 2 Released in 2002

Layla’s debut album Heretik was one
of the most anticipated Australian hip hop albums of 2005. A diminutive, dark featured femcee in her early twenties, Layla has a strongly assertive, abrasive way of expressing herself which commands attention, and she is not averse to streams of expletives. This is shown to good example in the invective track ‘The fuss about sluts’, which deals with the fractious issue of women in hip hop and their assumed sexual availability by most
male “playas”, but is also about the legions of Britney Spears “wannabes” in the music industry who exploit their sexuality as an instrument of trade. The first thing about Heretik that strikes the listener is Layla’s broad Australian accent, followed by the anger which surfaces in many of her lyrics, often expressing the turmoil and torment of a difficult adolescence. Another striking feature of Heretik is Layla’s and DJ Dazahstah’s use of samples from other Australian hip hop artists such as The Hilltop Hoods, Bias B, Lyrical Commission and Mass MC, which pay homage to the efforts of Layla’s peers
and predecessors in the local hip hop scene. While Heretik contained enough energy and promise to install Layla as a potentially major new figure on the Australian hip hop scene, its widespread use of expletives prevented the album from gaining the airplay and recognition that it deserved. – Tony Mitchell

• A-Love is a female Australian-based MC from Melbourne. Her debut album, Ace of Hearts was nominated ‘Best Urban Release’ in the ARIA Music Awards of 2008. Appeared on Culture of Kings Vol. 2 Released in 2002 born Antonella Formosa in Rome, Italy on 21 March 1983. Rest assured, if I was a better singer, I’d be a soul singer! [MCing] was just something that I fell in love with in my teens. I’ve always been heavily into lyricism, no matter what kind of musical style I’ve been interested in. The fact that hip hop let you just not mince words and be really direct and cram so much more content and originality into your lyrics than singing was the biggest thing for me.
— Antonella Formosa
In January 2000, Formosa met Draino from the Puah Hedz. ALPHAMAMA

• Gangsta healer, channeller of other-worldly wisdom, ALPHAMAMA is the full spectrum of a feminine deity. Rapid fire raps and soulful lamenting, her presence on stage is unmatched. I think that I’m hugely influenced by my cultural background. And it’s unique. My mother is from South Africa with a European heritage and my father from Indonesia. Two very different cultures that through love and commitment, my parents were able to pass on to me. I feel that it has given me very unique ideas, values, music tastes and more. I realise that every time I create art or perform, I am drawing on the stories of my parents, my ancestors, my conditioning and also my own unique perception that comes from my own consciousness. I really want to include more of my culture in my art, especially since Indonesia is a such a rich resource of complex, musical diversity and it’s Australia’s closest neighbour. It’s a shame that we haven’t really even scratched the surface of that connection. God Queen is my way of fulfilling my purpose here. It’s to inspire and support conscious-women artists so that we can become world leaders. It’s a vehicle that aims to drive highly talented women artists with a heart to improve the world to reach global platform. That is my dream. A world in which women, art, music and spirituality are at the top of human values. It’s always been a philosophy of mine that if I’m going up, we’re going up together. So, through God Queen, I mentor young, women artists, educate, coach and provide a sense of strong community and holistic support. It is an independent label and artist development programme, but it’s also the legacy I want to create here on Earth. ALPHAMAMA is not your run of the mill singer. She is a forward-thinking, entrepreneurial artist who is a phenomena to witness in action. Commanding her space with other worldly presence, she engages her audience through her raw and evocative performances. An ALPHAMAMA live show is never the same, for her or for her audience; she instead creates a unique experience combining poetic storytelling, audience interaction, hard-hitting rap verses, booty-shaking and occasional oracle card readings. A love of Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop and World music underlies Alpha’s unique sound and approach to songwriting; sharing intimate accounts of her interaction with people and life but also her wonderings about the state of the world, the cosmos and a woman’s place in it. Her style has never been easy to box, constantly pushing boundaries of creative expression as can be heard on her debut album “Truth, Trips and Revelations” released through Creative Vibes. Since then much soul-searching and collaborating has uncovered a deeper tone to her voice and message. As a woman of mixed race, she inherited the unique features of her Indonesian father and European/South African mother, both of whom instilled a deep love of culture. She fuses her live sets with traditional Indonesian singing and African inspired beats when she’s not stripping it back accompanying herself on her keyboard. ALPHAMAMA has performed on stages all around the world recently wrapping up a global art tour of Indonesia, South Korea, Germany, USA and South Africa. She has supported and shared stages with Dead Prez, Jean Grae, Macy Gray and Salt n Pepa, Tuka, L-Fresh The Lion and toured as a backing vocalist for Australia’s own Jessica Mauboy. As an artist who is passionate about community, she is a highly regarded collaborator seeing her create music with Kween G, P.R, Danny G Felix, True Vibenation and Set Mo. Her recent release with Sydney house duo Set Mo introduced her to the dance music scene internationally with the track ‘Chasing Forever’. As a spiritually aware artist who is passionate about individual and collective expansion, she heads a record label, more like an art tribe of women artists called God Queen whose purpose is to bring about positive social change through art and remind women of their innate power. “…With the vigorous commanding energy and charisma of ten Beyoncés rolled into one… her presence on stage was magnetic and electrifying” – Tanya Bonnie Rae (themusic.com.au) “The girl has charm and presence and style and charisma. Her voice and her personality fill the room. The songs have depth and the delivery oozes soul. Alphamama combines a raw, powerful sexuality with a smart, commanding toughness… She is going to explode and you’ll have to sell a child to get a ticket to see her. My advice is to get a ticket now while you still have the chance.” – Benjamin (AMNPLIFY) “She’s hip, she’s strong, she’s got one hell of a voice. ALPHAMAMA prizes creative expression over digestibility and injects much-needed passion into music.” – Antigone Anagnostellis (Purple Sneakers
