Bad Math

BAD MATH is an experimental, hip-hop, beatmaker from Sydney. Hiding behind an animalistic mask the mysterious figure is inspired by 90’s hip hop workflow. Focusing on collecting sounds from vintage hardware, BAD MATH takes a ‘hands-on’ approach when composing his celestial ‘out-of-time’ rhythms.

BAD MATH released his debut beat tape “Celestial” on the 22nd Of Feb 2018. “Celestial” received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from fans, radio and blogs alike.

“Composing and performing mainly on Roland’s beastly SP-404 SX sampler, Bad Math’s beats instantly echo the wonky, floaty, and imperfect hip-hop popularised by J Dilla or Mos Def. It’s perfectly sloppy, falling from one rhythm to the next but never quite tripping up.” – HAPPY MAG.

“‘Celestial’ is the artist’s debut beat tape. A wild set of five tracks that bend, weave and congress through alternating sounds, samples and musical timeframes. An air of unrest lies within the mixtape, its beats never place a sense of complacency in the listener—remaining on edge throughout, as if the time signature and structure of the track will collapse and warp into something all together at any moment.” – AAA BACKSTAGE.

Briztronix
Shazam and DJ Bacon. Formed in 2000 After an 11-year hiatus, seminal underground hip-hop act Briztronix roars back with their fourth studio album, simply titled ‘IV’. Founded in 2000 in Brisbane by primary school friends Ben Eltham and DJ Bacon, Briztronix became one of the best-loved underground beat makers that formed in the Australian hip-hop explosion of the late 90s and early millennia. The group released an EP and two cult albums in the 2000s to wide airplay and considerable acclaim, touring nationally supporting the likes of The Herd, Hermitude, Buck 65 and Grandmaster Flash and winning a Big Sound Q Song Award for best hip-hop single in 2007. After a decade in the wilderness raising families and working on their day jobs, Briztronix are back with one of the freshest underground beats releases of 2018. Briztronix are officially joined on this album by Melbourne electronica producer RUFFLES (Dub Temple Records). Briztronix ‘IV’ is the band’s most assured release yet, blending cuts and scratches, live drums and synth washes with studio wizardry to teleport listeners back to the glory days of 90s underground hip-hop. All instrumental and harking back to the glory days of 90s illbient hip-hop giants such as DJ Shadow and DJ Krush, IV by Briztronix builds a rich musical soundscape complete with the incredible scratches of DJ Bacon and live drums from session drummer Chris O’Neill (Mia Dyson). https://hearthis.at/boogie-down-under-hip-hop-show/australian-made-show-3/

DJ A.T.P. ( ATP )

Gold Coast based Producer/ DJ A.T.P lays claim to accomplishments that few Australian and New Zealand artists can match. Few producers can proudly display a platinum plaque for co-writing a No. 1 Single. (Savage – Swing). Even less are responsible for defining the sound of an entire region, having worked with every local artist of note, including producing lead singles for different artists. However, only one Australian-based Hip-hop producer can lay claim to a single that hit the US billboard charts, featuring one America’s biggest Urban artists.A.T.P (Add To Playlist) founder and CEO of BeatKamp Muzik) can lay such a claim. After achieving No.1 Success with Savage’s breakout hit SWING, and eventual placement within the hit comedy, Knocked Up, New Z ealand born AT P launched an assault on the US charts that was unmatched in down under hip hop. Four years after its debut, a US remix of Swing featuring Multi-Platinum rapper Souljah Boy & Pittbull is currently being serviced on US radio. ( “swing” has just sold in excess of 2million copies, double platinum record status), a feature no New Zealand or australian hip-hop artist/producer has ever before achieved.)Performances @ Festivals like “The Big Day Out” ,”Super fest” and opening acts for Lupe,Eve,Xzibit,Naughty by Nature to name a few Have also earned ATP and Beatkamp a great fanbase audience & Show credibility. Not content with producing tracks for other artists (hit singles included!) ATP & BeatKamp muzik Have already Released a string of albums/mixtapes & Film/Videoclips across Australia/NZ TV, MTV, Channel V,Rage,Juice TV, C4 and has created a fitting introduction of a brand new sound to the down under region.ATP has Solidified himself firmly in the New Zealand music/Aus hip hop scene having collaborated & performed with the likes of some of down under`s most respected & successful Artists (360,Savage,Dkonz,The Collective, illy,Scribe,PNC,David dallas,Pieter T,Illegal Muzik,Aaradhna,to Name a few) “Speech” of arrested development also had Beatkamp produce For his japanese release.

– ydney based Producer/Dj A.T.P. (Aza Tha Producer), founder of BeatKamp Muzik. As one of Australia and New Zealand’s most respected and in-demand music producers, ATP has gone on to achieve what only few could dare to imagine. As the proud recipient of a platinum plaque for co-writing the No. 1 US hit single ‘Swing’for New Zealand hip hop artist Savage in 2010, that proved a definitive moment in the life of a producer hell bent on creating and defining the sound of the entire Australasian region. ATP has done the groundwork as a songwriter / producer, having lent his talent to the shaping of nearly every local urban artist in the region, from the producing of lead singles for a stable of different artists in the country. Clearly a producer who believes that the ingredients for the perfect beat lies in that light bulb ‘AHA’ moment accompanied by a thumping drum beat and a mixture of hip hop, soul and creativity is all that is needed make him switch into production overdrive. ATP has secured himself firmly in the New Zealand & Australian music industries with stellar collaborations in which he has either produced or co-written along with the likes of some of Aerotera’ s most respected & successful artists: Savage, Dkonz, Scribe, PNC, David Dallas, Pieter T, Illegal Muzik, Aaradhna, Donell Lewis to name a few. Closer to shore ATP adds to his impressive list of artists he has worked with namely: 360,Illy,Will Singe of X factors The Collective, Bombsquad, Bonnie Anderson, Jessica Mauboy, LazyJ, Joel Fletcher and globally U.S rapper Speech (of Arrested Development), Eric Bellinger, Soulja Boy and Pitbull. The list goes on but the prove is in the pudding, ATP and Beatkamp Musik are stepping to the beat of their own drum, chartering musical territories unmarked by any other music producers in this corner of the world and leaving their mark on not just the hip hop community but the global music as a whole

– I give everything I work on 120% I stand by my product/art + keeps clients coming back. The Client list is long. I have either produced, Ghost produced or collaborated over a number of different genres. I can name a few off the top- Savage, Pitbull, Soulja Boy, Scribe, Speech from Arrested Development, Eric Bellinger, David Dallas, PNC, Illy, 360, Dj Nino Brown, Mathieu Hykus, Joel Fletcher, Jessica Mauboy, Bonnie Anderson, Miracle, Aaradhna, Illegal Musik, Pieter T, Donell Lewis, Ezra James, MXXWLL, DJ Kronic, Will Singe (X Factor), Fortify, Brooke Evers, Lazy J, Tim Omaji, Reigan Derry (X Factor), Bomb Squad, DJ Butcher, Deceptikonz, Bec Quinn (X Factor), J Williams, Vince Harder and the list goes on…..There is still a few I can’t mention yet until released.I don’t really have a bucket list I like to keep my eyes and ears open for a fresh sound that gives me that “Light Bulb Moment” and want to work/collab with someone.

My journey in Hip Hop and Music started at a young age. I grew up around a Musical family who played in Band’s and Church. As a kid in the late 80’s/90’s I was inspired by Michael Jackson, Bob Marley & Bobby Brown. It wasn’t until high school that I really got into West Coast Rap & Hip Hop. If I can remember it was Straight Outta Compton, All Eyes on Me, Snoop Dogg (Doggy Style) albums that kicked started my journey. Dr Dre and early Timbaland were my early inspirations for production. Coming from a Musical background & playing the Guitar I’ve always had melodies in my head that needed to be brought to life. So I studied up on recording software, mastered it & that’s exactly what I did. (Brought the ideas to life.) Passion, Drive & Knowledge of the game is what has kept me here so long. I think the quality of production in Australia and Australian Music is in a good place right now across most genres. From experience a lot of U.S/International Artists have hit me up for beats with that down under Future RnB or Electronic Hip Hop type sound, since local artists like Lorde, Flume, Iggy, Timmy Trumpet, Savage have broken down the U.S barrier on a Billboard scale. Also the quality of unknown upcoming producers I’ve worked with are super dope with a newskool outlook on fusing Electronic/Deep House/Down Tempo Music with Hip Hop. Sounds new and fresh, I love it! Blueprint…..hmmmm. Australia major labels are usually asking me for U.S or chart sounding urban club bangers. TBH there isn’t really a blueprint for Kiwi/Poly/Maori Producers. I’m actually creating and documenting a Blueprint now as I go along. Hopefully opening doors so in future I can help others and there will be the Blueprint to follow.

Dj ADFU
Started in 2001
Palestinian born, Adfu first set foot on australian soil in 1991 and has been in Adelaide ever since. Hibernating in his bedroom, Adfu began to master his crafts of both turntablism and sound engineering. He interacted with like minded musicians and began a friendship with Golden Era records artists Vents, The Funkoars and Hilltop Hoods. Adfu’s first official release was in 2005, when he dropped ‘Part A’, an EP with his fellow collaborators Adroit Effusive, ‘Part E’ then followed in 2007. In 2010, Adfu engineered, mixed and mastered Adroits’ debut album, named ‘The Album’, in addition to scratching on all 19 tracks featured on that album. At the same time, Fu was also deep in projects with The Funkoars, both in the studio and on the touring circuit. He features on the latest two Oars albums, ‘the Hangover’ on Bootleg it, and ‘the Quickening’ on ‘WSDL’. In early 2011, Adfu became an integral part of Vents ARIA Nominated sophomore album ‘Marked for Death’. He formed a hard to top trio with Funkoars member, Trials and Vents. His work on ‘Marked for Death’ touched both the creative and engineering aspects of the album, from scratch hooks to recording vocals and mixing. Adfu is also one half of a newly formed group, with Trials of The Funkoars called, ‘Theory of Face’. The Duo’s 5 track digital EP, ‘Demz Sqidz’, was released in March 2011 and is available on iTunes. Apart from his work in the studio, Adfu also has an extensive tour history, smashing the stage on the road with the Funkoars, Hilltop Hoods and predominately Vents, where his skills step outside the decks and doubles as a hype man, adding an intriguing aspect to their powerful live set. With the release of the 2012 Golden Era Mixtape mixed entirely by Adfu getting the year started, things only seem to be getting busier for the multi-talented turntabalist/ sound engineer.

Dj Blaze
A dedicated enthusiast of the genre since 1984, DJ Blaze is well and truly a hip-hop veteran. Dynamic behind the decks, Blaze is soon to relocate from Sydney to Melbourne, but before that we’ve got one last chance to see the man in action as he supports turntable legend Grandmaster Flash. ITM’s Jayb got the low down on what been keep Blaze busy of late. How did you discover Hip Hop ; what made you want to become more than just a listener? Hip hop overwhelmed me in 84. I just freaked out at discovering that various things like graffiti art, b-boying, electro, rapping were all part ; parcel of a phenomenon from the South Bronx. At first it was totally alien from everything I had grown up with, yet I felt extremely drawn to all these aspects. I was fascinated ; wanted to know more about what it was ; who created it. I became obsessed with finding out more. I knew it wasn’t a passing moment. It changed my life. Pretty much the same reason that people were affected by Star Wars. It may sound trivial to most, but there are some things in life that have a greater power than what was intended. It’s all happenstance through age ; timing. I was lucky to have been the right age when it appeared. I wasn’t into music at all prior to that. What are your views on the current Hip Hop scene in Australia (do you think Hip Hop in general has sold out for commercial success ; that’s why homegrown scenes such as Australia ; England are growing) I’ve never seen it so active. There have many years of quiet despair where most of us older cats felt a sense of doom ; nowhereness. Thankfully in the last 3 years there has been a huge spurt of creativity ; a proliferation of artists ; labels. Seems like we are getting ourselves together ; finally making the Australian public aware that something is going on in the suburbs ; inner city. The crap that they try to pass off as hip hop via the major labels is an annoyance. Kinda like when Hammer was around, you felt bad saying you were into hip hop/rap because people associated the worst aspects of the music with circus rubbish like him. Who the hell wants to be aligned with the balloon-pant wearing ‘holy ghost boy’ (his 1st MC name by the way). Just as who wants to make themselves sound like a dumb shithead by buying all that stupid ‘thug’ crap. Some people seem to get a kick out of it for various reasons. So the only way that I see the scene growing is by being able to relate to your audience so that it works both ways. They see a bit of themselves reflected in the music by local artists then offer support by attending shows ; buying records, cd’s etc… The question is…What are they doing it for? To become a pop star or to use it merely as a vehicle for self-expression. Your working hard on your album, when can we expect to hear some of the beats ; will it all be Hip Hop flava? It will obviously be mostly hip hop related. I’m pretty much a beauty kinda guy. I’ll be working with Sleeping Monk for sure. Our history dates back 10 years now ; I love his rhyme style ; punchlines. Getting him motivated is another thing. He’s getting better. I’ll have a few b-boy oriented things as well. Gotta keep that uptempo funk thing happening. Most of the stuff is over the 100bpm threshold, something that is ignored in today’s hip hop. I’m also going to attempt some Miami bass manoeuvres. My aim is to at least do one electro track. I feel I have to give something back to what inspired me in the first place. That is further down the track though. You’ve been mixing since 1988 when you bought your 2nd turntable (two always helps I guess), do you have a preference in creating or mixing beats? I prefer making beats, because it gives you sense of satisfaction that does not come from playing someone else’s music. This is not to say that I don’t appreciate what I am playing, on the contrary, it’s just a feeling of pride ; achievement when making music ; getting to play it on wax. I’m not the tightest deejay ; I know why. I suffer from impatience ; hurriedness. When I relax ; get into the groove I get my skills in check. I wouldn’t have a clue about mixing in key or any of that crap. I’m not interested. Too rigid ; boring. Hip hop has always had a different style of mixing that allows for more freedom ; abstractness. As for inspiration. It’s usually the music (ie records) or other deejays that don’t patronise to their audience. I am personally only interested in people who want to share a wealth of music that others ignore. Let them play the hits ; sureshots. I’m not interested in that audience. I want those that say, ‘okay I’m here. I paid to get in…give me something that I don’t know’. If it’s a good tune ; it works, people will respond. Why do people have to be familiar with something to enjoy it. Of course people have their favourites, but at one stage they didn’t. Which Aussie up ; coming stars would you recommend we keep an ear out for? I like The Optimen from Qld. Fresh, funny ; no attitude. Keeping it entertaining in that early 90s way. Solomon Klepto from Melb. All round nice guy, very deep ; passionate. And needs to express himself. Present Tense from Canberra, if they ever get around to finishing their stuff. Hopefully Max Veritech from Perth will keep up his turntable compositions ; start to get some more original sounds ; phrases to cut. He’s on the right track though. To be honest, there are several established artist who make great stuff ; there are those that have potential with their passion, but I have yet to hear something that literally blows me out of the water. It must exist, but most of the stuff I hear demo wise is all pretty lacklustre. I’m a bit more picky than most, but why bother sending something to someone ; then explain with a million excuses about.. the quality is shit, we hurried it, my cat died that day, I lost my original rhymes, not our best stuff, etc… It’s amazing. You rarely get something that doesn’t have an excuse book attached. Where’s the confidence ; the ‘good stuff’. Grand Master Flash is one of if not the pioneer of Hip Hop, how would you measure his influence today? Would we even be talking about this without his involvement. I’m not so sure. He was a main cog in the machinations of the culture. Take him away ; the machinery would never have got off the ground. Sydney will be sad to lose your services, what are the reasons behind the move to Melbourne? Umm, er…a relationship! Very strong one with someone who understands where I’m coming from. And also, I see it as a nice change that might make me look at things in new perspective. To get away from familiarity ; a sort of sense of stagnancy that I feel I may have succumbed into. Besides I have friends down there that I like being with ; don’t communicate enough with while interstate. Now it’s their turn to listen to my bullshit. http://inthemix.junkee.com/dj-blaze-hip-hop-obsession/1611

Dj Broke
Dj Broke – from NSW. 2015 Australian DMC Winner “It was an honour to be invited to work with such a prolific talent as Lance. I loved the idea behind Raw Material, so it was great to be able to explore the concept by taking the whole process a step further. For the mega-mix, the remixes and originals were broken down into stems and arranged in layers, so that everything could be reconstructed by scratching, juggling and mixing it together using turntables and a mixer. For the video, I wanted to make something that went against the grain of so many rock star DJ videos you see these days. I wanted it to be less about the DJ and more about the music and the technique. Matt Smolen at Balloon Tree Productions did an amazing job filming and putting the whole thing together.” – Broke aka Uncle Leo https://www.facebook.com/LanceFergusonMusic/videos/1481817311924119/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBRJrzQkHmI
- Broke is the latest and greatest NSW DMC Champion to take out the Australian DMC championships and fly onwards to London to rep Australia at the 2015 World DMC finals. DJ Dameza
2005 Tasmanian DMC champion It’s a new world for DJ’s, many are left behind in the wake of those who are willing to embrace new technology and partner it with traditional, well honed skills. Able to mix, mash, cut and chop any material seen fit to keep the party alive, Dameza’s mixed media shows are an instant go-to for festivals, unique collaborations and showcase artistic events. Some of which include Redbull, Ten Days on the Island, Mona Foma/ Dark Mofo plus the highly coveted position of MONA’s own resident DJ. Running state of the art audio and video programs, Drum Machines and the most recent professional DJ equipment Dameza performs his traditional no holds barred turntablist / party rocking / mashup style but with the added immersive element of real-time mixed visuals, live video cameras and complex lighting. With the main focus being a good time, his engaging on stage persona and a multi faceted show have lead to being able to collaborate with live digital artists, instrumentalists and even street artists.
Blending everything from the last 40 years of music, big screen, television, the vast depths of the internet and digital art and animation, his shows are always appealing across the board, sometimes tailored with an underlying ‘theme’ but they always are fast paced, energetic and unpredictable. This in conjunction with Dameza’s serious skill set on the turntables, live drums, original production and crowd hyping ability leads to a party only a few in Australia are touted as being able to provide.
His reputation has continued to spread, both Australia wide and internationally, leading to a vast array of coveted support acts for the likes of DJ Shadow, Grandmaster Flash, Q-Bert and Mixmaster Mike. His prowess in live DJ performances has also had eyes and ears pinned, with requests from such acts as Young MC, RA the Rugged Man and Paris Wells to back them up in live shows as well as trekking the country with Golden Era Records award winning MC ‘Briggs’ as his official tour DJ. 2015 has seen Dameza team up with Drummer Alf Jackson to bring a true live element to his show, exploring the depths of live remixing and video manipulation teamed with impressive percussive elements.
With an insatiable urge to stay a cut above the rest, Dameza sounds rings out worldwide and the best is surely yet to come.

member of 750 Rebels & The Statesmen DJDCIDE aka DJDCE is the backbone of Karsniogenics – Co-Owner and Head-Honcho in charge. No stranger to the culture since his graffiti days of the early to late 90s, DJDCIDE took to the wheels of steel and began hitting Brisbane stages alongside vocalist MISS BROWN in 2000. By 2002 he was playing shows alongside Brothers Stoney and The Town Drunxxx, which is where the crew decided to formalize the group 750 REBELS as the force in Brisbane to be reckoned with. On top of his 750 commitments DJDCIDE has toured with many Australian hip-hop artists including BIAS B and REASON and runs the Karsniogenics label operations, making him one of the busiest men the game.DJDCIDE’s first collaborative release was the “Home Made” EP with MISS BROWN in 2005, followed up by “Begged Borrowed Or Stolen” alongside LEN ONE in 2006. Not to forget the 2007 750 REBELS release “Spit Vicious”, nor his work with LAZY GREY’s 2009 release “The Soundtrack” he then formed the production duo THE STATESMEN with MC/producer SEAN B in 2010, releasing the debut album “Drama To The Finish”, only to follow on with 750 REBELS ‘KOLD HEAT’ in 2014/2015. DJDCIDE has been the studio engineer on almost all of the label’s 19 releases to date, as well as designing many of the aforementioned brands and cover art packages for the label. He was also co-host come host of the former 4ZZZ Phattape Hip-hop Show for 8 years through the 2000s(Australia’s longest running hip-hop show of 23 years).

DJ Eli Westlake
“For those that don’t know of him, Eli was a writer, MC and DJ in the Sydney scene but most importantly he was a straight-up good bloke who will be terribly missed,” said one friend, MrIzz, in an online posting to the hip hop magazine Stealth Another Sydney-based hip hop artist, Scott Burns, wrote: “Eli had a heart of gold, a great supporter and artist within the local hip hop movement. This is tragic, still speechless. Rest in peace mate.” “Eli was a champion,” wrote Swarmy, while another poster, Rival, described Mr Westlake as “one of the nicest guys you could hope to meet, a true supporter of the scene”. “He had music in his blood and [I] was looking forward to hearing what he produced,” another bereaved friend, Magic D, wrote on the Stealth forum yesterday. Another poster, Sarmone, said: “As much as I know you’re probably in a better place mate, I’m selfish and wish you were still here.”

DJ Force
Born and raised in Wollongong, DJ Force has been listening to Hip Hop music since 1989, when as a 9 year old kid started collecting tapes of such artist as DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, NWA, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, A Tribe Called Quest just to name a few. At the age of 17, Force decided to try his skills on the wheels of steel and became a DJ making mix tapes, supporting visiting crews and performing the occasional club spot in the Wollongong and Sydney area. After years of mastering his craft, he joined an emcee named T Boogie Ray to start the crew The Stimulations and sought out beats from local beat makers. Unable to get beats from local producers he decided to try his hand at making his own beats. His first effort “Steel City Rappin” was released on the 2001 Argonauts Album “The Journey”. The second beat he ever produced was also featured on that album, a DJ track called “At Home”. “Steel City Rappin” was well received with Triple J playing the track during daytime programming. Not a bad effort for the first beat he ever made. After the release, Force has produced exclusively for Sonny Syah however not releasing anything. DJ Force has produced all but one of the track for thr soon to be released’ Sonnt Syah Album “The Envelope: An audio Motion Picture” which features Fame, 13th Son, Trey, Steve Carfino and many more. He has been DJing in clubs for over 10 years and most recently held a residency at the Bustin’ nights in Wollongong. He has supported both local and international acts such as Koolism, The Herd, Bias B, Funkoars, Celsius, Reason, Katalyst, Aceyalone (USA), Mystro (UK) and many more over the years and is well respected in the Wollongong and Sydney Hip Hop scene for his ability to get a crowd moving. Keep a look out for the DJ Force debut release this year featuring O.C., Al-Shid and Sonny Syah.

DJ Grotesque
Started in 2002
DJ Grotesque has been keeping busy on the Hobart club scene for quite a while now. From residencies, support slots, touring and festivals to promoting, hosting radio shows and production it’s no surprise that he won the Amplified Awards ‘DJ of the Year Award’ in 2010. With a passion for getting people to shake what their mothers gave them, he’s definitely become a dance floor favourite. With the firm belief that there are only two genres (good music and bad music!) his sets are always full of surprises, from Bobby McFerrin to House of Pain to Johnny Cash to Bassnectar nothing is out of bounds. He is also a firm believer that while people will always want to hear the classics, it’s the DJs job to open the audiences eyes to new music. The digital DJ revolution has opened a lot of avenues for creativity and DJ Grotesque has embraced the change with the addition of video to his repertoire. Keeping to his ‘anything goes’ musical tastes, his audio visual show takes everything from obscure instructional videos to classic cinema and throws it at the dancefloor. Now in his eighth year as a resident at local nightclub Mobius, he can also be seen most weekend playing at Cargo Bar bringing the funk vibe. He has also held down regular slots at Curlys, Syrup and Ivory. He has been fortunate enough to share a stage with the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Mix Master Mike, Z-Trip, Q-Bert, Lyrics Born, Ugly Duckling, The Hilltop Hoods, Bliss n Eso, Urthboy, The Herd and many more. He is also one of only three local DJs to have had the opportunity to play on the main stage at The Falls Festival in Marion Bay bringing in the new year after Michael Franti and Spearhead.
For bookings contact djgrotesque@gmail.com
To keep up to date with new mixes and upcoming shows check:

DJ J-Red
DJ J-Red is Australia’s only World DJ Champion, earning his prestigious title by taking out the World 2005 ITF Experimental Category in Prague in 2005. Known as the the DJ who introduced Video Turntablism to the battle scene, the road to the coveted world championship was a long and well fought one, forged through countless sets, battles, performances and routines around the globe. No stranger to the World DJ Competition Battle scene, J-red is also actually a very diverse DJ playing all styles of music, having learnt the ropes with Mobile DJing at age 11, at age 15 moving into R&B and Hip hop nightclubs under the guidance of Melbourne R&B pioneer DJ John Casa (Central Station/Wicked records). J-Red then entered his first DJ Battle at age 19 the ‘Brown Sugar DJ competition’ @Silvers nightclub in Melbourne walking out with $1000 cash for his excellent blend of Club music and scratch abilities. He then became a Radio DJ on KISS FM with fellow DMC/ITF DJ champion DJ Kuya mixing live on 4 turntables at age 20 on the Turnstyles show. J-Red started running nights in the late 90s and early 2000s like ‘Fresh!’, ‘All good!’ and ‘Madizms’ known for pulling 800 people to 2 levels of Hip hop and Funk at The Laundry on a Monday night with absolutely no promo, just a really good mix of music and turntable dexterity which led to residencies at ‘The Lounge’, ‘First Floor’ and the very popular ‘Honky Tonks’. J-Red then went on to throwing his signature cuts on a number of Vinyl and CD releases for record labels Nuffsaid, Unkut recordings, Obese recordings and Crookneck records, all of which are all known to go for top dollar now in the collectors market to this day, chuffed to say ‘not once have i ended up in a JB bargain bin!’ In 2006 J-Red wanted to take his World ITF Experimental DJ title further, he jumped at the chance to help ‘Heavyweight TV’ for Channel 31 which led to him becoming a TV producer for his next project ‘J-Red’s Video Throwdown’ also shown on Channel 31 around Australia where he mixed music video clips on ‘Pioneer DVJ-X1’ DVD Turntables with all the best mixing juggling and scratch precision he’s known for on a set of Technics Turntables. Pioneer Electronics took notice and J-Red was then made a Pioneer DJ Ambassador, giving feedback to engineers in Japan while showcasing with some of the biggest names in the industry all around Australia and parts of Asia. Having played to at venues and nightclubs in London, Prague, Vienna, Los Angeles, Japan, Singapore the list goes on as you can picture. Gone are the days of lugging 3 crates of records around 5 nights a week all over the country as the DJ’s adopted Serato, J-Red is still known to pull out an all Vinyl set every now and then for a bit of fun. Whatever format, whatever mixer whatever crowd, whether at Brixton Academy in London in front of 4000 people, or at The Met in Brisbane for a couple of Thousand, J-Red will always take you on an epic journey filled with a great selection, great mixing and his signature precision and charm that only he is capable of in the mix. Appeared on Culture of Kings Vol. 2 Released in 2002
DJ J-Red and DJ Diverse “1.2. Add to that playing alongside such influential artists such as Jurassic 5, Ozomatli, Black keys, Gangstarr, Afrika Bambatta, Black eyed peas, Method man, Redman, Public enemy, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Rahzel, Kool keith, Masta Ace – already you get a sense of how seriously he takes his DJing to new heights. This is just the tip of the iceberg!! DJ J-RED was introduced to the decks at an extremely early age, busting stylus’s and turnatables at the age of 4!!. He started djing parties at the age of 11, playing Funk, Reggae, Rock, Hip-Hop and everything in between. He started Djing at underage events at the age of 13, and moved into overage clubs at the age of 16. He had learnt alot of his mentors about mixing programming and keeping the vibe with different groups of people within the room. At the age of 17 he entered his first DMC battle placing 3rd, little did he know he would be the only Dj with 8 National titles buy the time he had released his first (legal) mix cd – Streets Ahead on Crookneck/Stomp.
J-Red then went on to throwing his signature cuts on a number of Vinyl and CD releases for record labels Nuffsaid, Unkut recordings, Obese recordings and Crookneck records, all of which are all known to go for top dollar now in the collectors market to this day, chuffed to say ‘not once have i ended up in a JB bargain bin!’
In 2006 J-Red wanted to take his World ITF Experimental DJ title further, he jumped at the chance to help ‘Heavyweight TV’ for Channel 31 which led to him becoming a TV producer for his next project ‘J-Red’s Video Throwdown’ also shown on Channel 31 around Australia where he mixed music video clips on ‘Pioneer DVJ-X1’ DVD Turntables with all the best mixing juggling and scratch precision he’s known for on a set of Technics Turntables.
Australia’s only World DJ mixing champion! Dj Johnny Idem
Started in 1989
John Idem has been involved in the Melbourne Hip Hop scene since the early 80’s. He started out collecting Hip Hop records in 1983 and was Djing around town by 1989. He was one of the founding members of The DMA Crew and later became part of the RFK posse, producing a number of their early releases including “1992” on Trem’s debut “Sheer Talent” and the Raise tape “Tha Essence”. These days he’s still actively involved in music and production as well as owning the record label “Jaycees Records” with his partner Cassandra. In 1989 I started Djing for mc’s , cuttin records back and forth for rhymers. I remember doing a show at the Metro with a bunch of Mc’s, this is 1990, Seany B from the Statesmen , Madhat (who is “Ron B Me ” now, we are doing a new album together this year), Reason, Voitek (when he used to rap), Raph and his crew, just a bunch of dudes. The show was off the hook, I was sweatin after that show, it was Mad! I was spinnin hip hop records at hip hop nights soon after that for a few years until i got into spinnin the funk and soul in 95. – Idem I first met up with Frenzie who had met Trem and Raise , they were originally from Geelong. I also met Brad through Frenzie too. I met Rob Nat and Bob Balans through PBS and DJ Krisy. She had played a demo of theirs that they sent into her and I told Trem that I reckon these guys are really good and that they had potential and that we should all make tracks . By the mid 90’s I went off and did my funk thing and Djing a lot at clubs and stuff. I went overseas in 1997 and was dealing a lot of records and trading stuff and was busy doin my thing and about that time Trem and the guys went onto form Lyrical Commission. Good on em I knew they could do it , them guys are hell good rhymers! – Idem

Dj Just1
DJ Just1 does not only hold down the club scene, he keeps it in a jugular-crushing headlock that no other DJ can break through. It’s in the environment of the Canberra club scene that he has earned his rep as the Australian Capital’s number one Hip-Hop and R&B DJ. First earning his DJ props through a State DMC Championship title in 2004, DJ Just1 has successfully walked the shaky line between turntablist and party DJ, maintaining a high level of recognition and respect in both areas of the DJ craft. Since taking the crown he has been one of the busiest in the business, becoming a major fixture at RnB and Hip-Hop clubs all over the city, current residencies include: Chinese Laundry, The Ivy, Meche, Academy, North Bar etc… It’s Just1’s diversity as well as his intricate turntable skill’s that has seen him go beyond the club realm and onto the big stage for notable music festivals including Good Vibrations in Sydney – 2008, 2009 & 2010 and Canberra’s Foreshore Music Festival in 2008, 2009 & 2010. Just1 is also the first name in the DJ rolodex when it comes to booking a true party-starter to warm-up crowds at some of the biggest tours, including: Busta Rhymes, Cypress Hill, Naughty by Nature, Pharoahe Monch, Q-Tip, Pharcyde, Kid Cudi, Arrested Development, 112, Wale, Gym Class Heroes, Next, Jean Grae, Dj Craze, Cut Chemist (Jurassic 5), Dj Z-Trip, Spinderella, Dru Hill, Horace Brown, Chauncey Black, Bone Thugs & Harmony, Supernatural, Fatman Scoop and more. Despite being in the game for more than a minute, the momentum behind DJ Just1 is only just starting to build. With the next music festival season less than six months away and offers from club promoters throughout Australia coming his way thick and fast, Just1 is set to be leading the wave of new generation DJs to watch out for. With 8 years of daily fine tuning behind the turntables and constant work within the ACT club scene, there are few people in the Canberra music industry with the experience and respect that Just1 can lay claim to. If you’re ever in town, the chances are you’ll find Just1 easily enough- rocking a fitted cap and a crisp pair of Air Force 1s on his feet, DJ Just1 will either be at the bar, in the VIP or more than likely tearing it up behind the decks at the biggest and best party any night of the week. How many DJ’s does it take to rock a party? Just1! <img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-101655" src="https://australianhiphopdirectory.com/wp-content/uploads/dj-just1-flyer-212x300.jpg" alt=" width="212" height="300" /> https://www.mixcloud.com/djjust1/

Dj KC
DMC Winner 1992 & 1993 and world finalist in 1992 As a kid growing up in suburban Sydney, KC found a passion for Funk and Hip Hop at an early age. He loved the whole culture and was embedded in all elements but when he heard “Adventures on the wheels” by Grandmaster Flash in the early 80’s, he was immediately hooked as for the first time he heard how songs could be dramatically manipulated by a DJ. He could not afford turntables at the time so he experimented with dual tape decks which he later used to make mixed music for the choreography and rehearsals of his break dance crew “Electro Breakers”. The crew used the mixes for the shows and regular gigs at shopping centers across Sydney, suburban clubs, and even at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. This was his first taste of performing in front of thousands of people at a young age of 16 and after the huge injection of adrenaline he knew that performance and music was going to be his lifetime passion. At the age of 17 he was given a mixer as a birthday present, but he had no decks so he took apart the home stereo and to make a DJ coffin. From that point on he was obsessed, constantly making mix tapes for all his friends at school, doing private parties, functions and started to make a name for himself.

KC was determined to excel in this new found art of DJing but he found that he could only go so far teaching himself through experimentation as DJs were scarce at the time. However when he stumbled on a worldwide DJ community called DMC which branched in Australia 1988, it opened up doors for him to progress in this art. He was now able to learn from videos of DJ champions worldwide performing the scratches, fast mixing and tricks that could only be heard on imported audio tapes in Australia at the time. Through this inspiration he trained day and night non-stop for a year and in 1989 he entered a local DJ battle in Sydney’s west where to his surprise won first place. He was now more confident and decided to enter the dmc national finals in 1990 where he came second in the state. He persisted and in 1992 he won the Australian Championships by perfecting the new found beat juggling technique and utilizing 4 turntables. KC kept winning all competitions and DJ Battles up until 1996 when he teamed up with DJ A$K (1990 Australian DMC Champ) and Skizo (Italy’s renown hip hop dj). He ended up representing Australia 3 times with a 5th placing in the world in 1993 when he performed with 4 turntables at the “Ministry of Sound” U.K and went up against the likes of Q Bert, Mix Master Mike, Crazy B, Noise, and Rectangle. That same year KC was also awarded “Best Creativity in Mixing” at Australia’s first R&B Awards hosted by Mike Scott of “Ten Wedge”. KC retired from battles in 1996 but kept on rocking all major clubs and parties across Australia with mind blowing club sets that always left the crowd in awe. Being a lover of all music and genres he was able to play all styles from underground hip hop jams to club house and major raves. However KC never lost his grass roots and kept a funky soul flavor to all the different genres that he played. KC was also well known for his 4 deck demos during this period and in 1995 he was approached by a rep from DENON to launch their new mixer. He did not know it at the time but he became the first Australian DJ to be officially sponsored by a corporation to showcase their products: DENON (1995), Technics (1996), Intimidation (1997) and Vestax in (1999). DJ KC was also the first DJ to showcase and perform at corporate tradeshows like ENTECH EXPO in 1997 and found himself in demand from all major companies that wanted to push their products. He did many national tours for these companies and promoted their products in various clubs in each state. He was featured with a tutorial CD Insert in the cover of Australia’s highly acclaimed magazine for music technology, “Next Music”. He also started his own weekly column called “Hot Stuff” in the popular street press “3d world” as editor and reviewer of latest DJ equipment. He contributed his work to other urban street mags “On the Street Magazine” and “Request Mag”. In radio he did a weekly show “Turntablistics” to dedicate pioneering DJs that put scratching on wax with DJ Mark Walton on “Radio Dex”. On TV he has appeared and showcased on BBC UK’s “Club Choice”, Channel V, Arena, “Australia Uncovered” (Sky U.K), and Ground Zero (SBS). KC has played alongside pioneers like Jam Master Jay (Run DMC), Kool Herc (Founder of Hip Hop), Ca$h Money, 3 X World Champ DJ Craze and A Track to name a few. As a party rocker that could play to any crowd, KC is in high demand in all genres of music in diverse clubs and festivals across Australia which has kept him extremely busy throughout the 20 years of his DJ Career. He now focuses on teaching the art of DJing to upcoming DJs and appears as special guest at clubs and parties across Australia and Melbourne where he now resides.

DJ Peril
Started in 1983
Founding member of 1200 Techniques Peril – Jason Foretti – grew up in Melbourne, he started b-boying when he was 12, in… 1982-1983. I would say Peril was at the beginning of this graffiti and breakdancing movement. He was “the famous kid” among DJ’s and producers. From age 12 he was fully involved in the scene, had fully developed techniques in graffiti and was a part of many crews. He had their names in his tags… Him and his brother Simon – Kemstar – were into it. This was hip-hop in Melbourne in the 80’s, it was all about graffiti and breakdancing. Peril loved music, he started to buy records and make his own tapes, producing his own beats, DJ’ing– just embracing the culture, every part of it! It was at the time, when people around the world embraced hip-hop and became the children of it. I didn’t know who Peril was yet. At 17, when I finished high school, I moved to Melbourne. There was a venue called Evelyn, I’d go there, because I could get a few free beers, meet some people and rap. I loved rapping, I used to be in a freestyle band, I even have already recorded an album with my bros by the time I was 17, some tripped out world music hip-hop. But it never got released. Peril heard about us – me and my brother Kabba– and we met him in Evelyn. He was always FRESH, tracksuit and a gold chain on. Nothing changed, even now he dress fresh. He was a cool dude. Even if he was 9 years older than me, we vibed and formed a connection. I was used to being around people older than me, my brother is 6 years older, so it wasn’t a problem for me. We started hanging out, he gave us some beats. Those beats were little “too” hip-hop for me, I was more into world music and “other” sounding stuff then. I didn’t want to do what was done in New York or L.A. at that time, I wanted to create my own thing, make it more “African”. A couple of his tracks started to get to me, I started rapping on them, sending my ideas to him, finally we recorded something on a 4-track… Or was it 8-track? From there it was: “Hey, we should go to my mate Danny’s studio and record it properly. We started laying tracks down bit by bit, Peril and my brother would give me suggestions. We then started gigging a little, Peril was a DJ, and we rapped on some famous breaks, but also our own material. Later we started to get a little bit of notoriety, but then my brother wanted to go back to England… I was faced with a choice – keep working like my brother, or do this project which I started to enjoy. it was a very stressful and difficult situation. In the end my brother went back to London, I stayed. I’ve written the song called “Karma” while doing some chores in the house, also came up with the melody. We recorded a basic version with Peril. I’ve freestyled first 8-10 bars – the same first bars of “Karma”. We sat on it for a while, while we were playing shows, and people were getting more interested…. Peril’s brother – also a b-boy and graffiti artist – got involved too. He was always playing the guitar, he was more into rock and blues and psychedelic music. – N’fa http://www.popkiller.pl/2017-02-26%2Cnfa-jones-interview

DJ Ransom
Started in 1988
DJ Ransom – Ransom’s DJ career began in the early 80’s, collecting records ; mix tapes which by the mid 80’s led to Ransom producing his own mix tapes and gaining work at local house parties. The late 80’s saw his first bookings, at the “hip” Checkpoint Charlie ; Inflation nightclubs. However, this period was mostly spent establishing Australia’s first Hip Hop label “Straitup” which had four releases and culminated in Ransom playing his first international gig, New York, 1990. Upon returning to Melbourne he teamed up with local Hip Hop identity DJ Krisy and presented the “Steppin the AM” show on 3PBS. His involvement in radio continued on 3RRR in the mid 90’s with the show “U Booty” co hosted by Oss. Also shows on Kiss FM with Mr Takse ; J’nett and finally the “Fear of a Wak Planet” which attracted a wide audience for years until the station’s demise in 2001. Early 90’s also saw Ransom’s first residency, a night called “Black Eyed Peas”, a rare groove night which lasted a year. Following on from that his seminal night “Purveyors” ran for the majority of the decade and was a Saturday night staple in Melbourne. A number of today’s super stars such as Fat Boy Slim, Groove Armada and Qbert all played their first Australian spots at “Purveyors”. Another residency, Friday’s at Saratoga, ran concurrently for about five years. Being a boogie/disco affair it serves today to illustrate Ransom’s wide knowledge of music and ability to play to all types of crowds. Ransom’s current night is “The Late Show” at Revolver Saturday nights. This attracts up to a thousand punters every week and is continuing Ransom’s now long established tradition of running nights that are both entertaining ; progressive. This is one reason why he was nominated in the “Australia’s Best DJ” category at the annual 3D Dance Music Awards in 2001. As far as “battling” and “turntablism” Ransom is considered Australia’s first “technical” dj. He has two DMC titles to his name and has jammed with luminaries such as DJ Noize, Qbert, and “The Avalanches” DJ Dexta. He regularly teaches at both the DMC dj course and for various community groups. Touring has been a constant for Ransom for almost a decade. Apart from headlining spots at clubs in all capital cities, he has done (and is still doing) all the major national festival tours such as Big Day Out, Vibes on A Summer’s Day, Splendour in the Grass and Livid. He has done extensive touring supporting bands and at the request of Beastie Boys toured nationally with all Grand Royal acts for a period in the late 90’s. Recently Ransom supported DJ Shadow at his request. Production wise, Ransom has been prolific regularly releasing “underground” music since the late eighties. Currently his main project “Crackpot”, a 3 piece live act, has an album deal with Tummy Touch Records UK (Groove Armada’s original label). Their two successful releases “Tippy Tippy Toe” and “The Wrong Party EP” have enjoyed support from many radio shows/stations worldwide. Not the least of which being Giles Peterson on BBC Radio One. A “Crackpot” album is forthcoming mid 2003. Ransom is also releasing music in Europe through UK label “Supercharged”, and has many remix credits under his belt including the “Resin Dogs” ; “Ku-Ling Bros”. Having a background in making mix tapes and reputation for being both musically ambitious and technically proficient made Ransom an obvious choice when the mid nineties phenomenon of mix cd’s was launched. His two volumes of the “Physics of Freestyle” were loved by critics and the music buying public alike. Both titles continue to sell domestically and as export, a third volume is on the cards. Continued immersion in all aspects of playing and recording music has Ransom in a unique position. He has been profiled by “The Age” and “Herald Sun” newspapers, in addition to many magazines from glossy to street level. In the past he has written for various publications, lectured at universities, sold ; licensed his photographs, and was involved in “The Marble”, a book which takes a retrospective look at Melbourne’s Hip Hop Scene in the eighties.
Which is where it all began…….
Iconic DJ and producer Ransom’s career has spanned well over two decades, known as a pioneer of Australian hip hop as well as a long-time prolific figure in Melbourne’s club and radio circuits. Production wise, Ransom has released “underground” music since the late eighties, remixing for artists such as the Resin Dogs and Ku-Ling Brothers, producing for his main project “Crackpot” who are signed to UK label “tummy touch”, the original home of Groove Amada and Djing and producing as an integral member of hip hop heavyweights Mnemonic Ascent. nd is part of Mnemonic Ascent with Raph Boogie (owner of Blank Clothing).

DJ Selekt
2002 DMC Winner DMC Team Winner 2001, 2002, 2003 & 2004 Selekt also repped in the Battle for Supremacy in 02 Taking out the Australian solo DMC title in 2002, he went on, along with partner J-Red, to a highly respectable fourth position in 2003’s world team championships as the Dirty Duo. First of all and perhaps inevitably, how did you get into djing?

Basically I was always into music. My parents made me have lessons and choose an instrument to be in the school band. That was good for basic music knowledge, but, playing saxophone in the school big band isn’t really that cool (or so you think), when you’re in high school. I was a fan/collector of hip-hop music, especially the instrumental dj/jazz stuff that was coming out in the Mo Wax records era. Pretty much the Dj Krush & Dj Shadow Mo Wax releases got me interested in djing. Then I bought a dj competition video (DMC best of the best – Roc Raida, Qbert MMM, etc) and saw all the equipment that was needed, saved up, and bought turntables. What forms of music did you first get into, and who are your favourite Artists from all genres? Whatever my friends were listening to. I hung out with the skaters in School; DJ Selekt was destined to be a pro skater until I knew my Ankles weren’t up to getting torn down steps! But, luckily for me, all the US skate videos we were watching at the time (95 – 97) had really dope underground hip-hop and beats. I based a lot of my first record buying on getting the tracks I remembered from skate video soundtracks: Souls of Mischief, Tribe Called Quest, Nas, DJ Krush, whatever! My favourite Artists nowadays are similar to when I started, however I do listen & buy music outside of hip-hop. Hip-hop isn’t as fun now that it’s blown up if you know what I mean? At the moment I like Jay Dee, Erik Sermon, Ghostface, DJ Spinna, Jazzanova, Grand Agent, Dj Cam & lots more! You’ve supported a lot of highly respected artists, which one are you most happy about having played along? You shouldn’t really get too psyched about big-noting who you’ve supported. Anyone can get a support if they try hard enough. When up and coming djs/artists bios have a big list of who they’ve supported it looks sort of tacky you know? But if I had to choose, I really liked the DJ Shadow tour. It was interesting to see how they organised all that live video stuff.

Why have you retired from solo battling? Solo battling takes a lot of time and you have to be angry to battle. I’m not that angry nowadays and try to manage my time better. With solo battling I’m happy enough that I have an AUS DMC title, as well as 2 x quarter-place finishes in the world DMC supremacy comp. I took a last stab at battling to win the 2002 AUS Quiksilver Dj battle and won $5K! That looks good on the resume. Can you explain the intricacies/logistics regarding the differences between solo battling and team battling? Do you prefer battling to just doing a trick set for the crowd? It’s very simple, a solo battle is one dj competing. A team battle is 2 or more djs competing together. The Dirty Duo, myself Dj Selekt & Dj J Red are 3 x time Australian DMC team Champions, and, finished 4th place at the World DMC team competition last year. With trick sets I definitely prefer them in a battle setup, or , as the highlight of a show when you’re djing for someone. For general “djing” in clubs I’m not really into trick sets, and prefer tricks in the mix with fat beats. How did you hook up with DJ J-Red? We battled against each other in Melbourne DMC & ITF competitions. DJ J Red is the best competition I have ever had in any dj Comp, so it was an obvious choice for us to set up a team and fly the flag for Australia at the DMCs. Although things got a bit heated when we were still battling against each other in the solo’s while practicing for the teams! You would have to hide your solo routines at Team practice! Can you tell us about any upcoming records? Everything is still up in the air at the moment. I can promise some sort of DJ Selekt original material by the end of the year though. But, do not be shocked when you find out it’s not a turntablist style record. Is the production side of things only a recent thing? A hobby you’ve decided to expand, a natural progression? Yes a recent thing. I have always and regularly recorded scratches for MC’s; you can hear my cuts on a wide range of Australian hip-hop and some instrumental stuff. Some you might not even know it’s me! I’ve done some session scratching for TV ads once or twice. I’ve spun for a few overseas MC who’ve toured over the years as well. At the moment I tour with Mc Pegz & Plutonic lab doing all the cuts for the show live, and during the show myself and plutonic lab have a battle, dj versus drummer. Any MCs (Oz or otherwise) you’d like to work with? I’m still waiting for Rakim to call me about the 16’s on my new beats. (Pinch of salt people, pinch of salt.) D’you think hip hop/scratch DJs get enough cred? In other words, ‘dance’ DJs can whip a fader across and earn stupid amounts of cash, scratch DJs have to bring a hell of a lot more to the table (excuse the pun), no? Those that know…………know. You know what I mean? I roll with all sort of djs, and most of the house and Drum & bass djs I bump heads with know what time it is. They do their thing, but know what’s up with the scratch dj skill thing. Never underestimate the crowd too, they’re smarter than you think. Could you say who the best overall DJ is? Best ‘party’ set? Best technically? Because this dj thing is changing all the time, I couldn’t tell you who the best is. But, to be the best party dj, all you have to do is buy the hit records……………..right? What’s the key to a good set? A good set is mixed well, plus the sound levels are good and don’t jump Around too much. Hopefully you hear a few new records that you’ve never heard and want to hear again. I like sets with a dj using double copies and scratching. Not just playing the record but adding their own flavour while not overdoing it. If all that’s there and you don’t play too many classics I’ll be entertained. Any predictions for the upcoming Australian DMC championships? For the teams: Dirty Duo. For the Solo: Someone has to come out better than Staen-1 or he will win again. <img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-105930" src="https://australianhiphopdirectory.com/wp-content/uploads/selekt-1-300x199.jpg" alt=" width="300" height="199" />

DJ Sheep
DJ Sheep – 3 times Australian state DMC Dj Champion In the early 1990s, DJ Sheep ran a hip-hop mail-order catalog and was the Australian outpost for Bomb Hip-Hop Records (Return of the DJ), and made connections within the industry, writing for magazines around the world such as XXL, Bomb Hip-Hop Magazine, The Source, etc. In 1995, DJ Sheep set up the world’s first website dedicated to scratching culture, turntablism.com (now defunct). The website was subsequently purchased by Dan The Automator of San Francisco based record label 75ark Recordings in 1999, where Sheep lived for numerous years working on documenting turntablist culture, judging DJ battles around the world including the 1999 USA DMC finals. Between 1996 and 1999, he produced local hip-hop parties as well as the Australian and New Zealand tours for DJs Q-Bert, Disk, Craze and A-Trak. In 1996, after touring with DJ Q-Bert, Sheep decided that he wanted to be a DJ and began scratching on his friends’ turntables. In 1998 he bought his first set of decks and a mixer. At the same time he created the foundation of his former DJ crew, Terntable Jediz with DJ Krypton, Finatik & more. In 1999, Sheep was contacted by prominent clothing label, ECKO UNLIMITED, to endorse their clothing via a long-standing sponsorship. Between 2002 and 2003, Sheep won a consecutive sweep of every possible DJ title in his state, including 3 DMC titles, the Technics Ultimate DJ Showdown, and the Stanton DJ Battle. Dj Triple D
Started in 1983

caught the hip hop bug in 1983. I started in a popping crew called Power Circuit. By 1984 I was breakin’ with The Sonic Street Rockers. I used to make pause button cassette mixes for the backing music of our performances. In 1987 I started to DJ for MC Sugar Ray in Royal T Rock. Every Saturday I would DJ at ToffeeRox from about 1pm to 5pm, After that we’d go back to my parents place to put together a live jam with Ray rhyming, Silk beat boxing with me on turntables. Next stop would be Scratch FM in Fremantle from 9pm – 11pm. At the end of every show we’d always do the live track on air – as a last rehearsal before doing it live at Jules nightclub on Murray Street, which was the last stop – 12pm show.

1988 I joined up with Money J and Cash Tip as their DJ, we formed Rock Always Productions. As Money J said – we used to perform at Networks on Wednesday nights, after each finishing a jug of beer with grenadine drunk through a straw at Novaks. I must’ve been with R.A.P for about two or three years. I later started DJing for Perfexy – around 1991. We called ourselves S.O.U.L. – Sound of Urban Lifestyle. I knicked it from Terminator X.

1993 I won the WA State DMC Championship. I represented WA and came 4th at the Nationals held in NSW. It was the only year they allowed 1 vocalist and 1 musician with the DJ. The DMC changed the rules after DJ David from Germany dominated the competition in 1991 and 1992. I entered with MC Cash Tip from R.A.P. and I played bass guitar as well. By this time S.O.U.L. became Urban Lifestyle, and was no longer a hip hop band. It was the beginning of my search for a scene outside of hip hop.

From about 1994 I started to play in cover bands around Perth. If my memory serves me well I played with Black Jam in 1995, Sexual Chocolate in 1996, Cool Bananas in 1997, Vibe in 1998, The Bureau in 2000 and Booty Jooce in 2003. I produced the 1st season of Hip Hop Gladiators on channel 31 in 2005. I shifted to Melbourne in 2007 and played with a funk cover band Vinyl Collective. I published “The Streets of Perth Past & Present” in 2008.
I later settled back in Perth and got back into the things that are important to me – hip hop. I produced Out Of Necessity Magazine with MegaMike, while Money J and I formed Full Circle. We’re part of the resurgence of 1st generation, X generation hip hoppers who have grown up and have been around long enough to have seen quite a few changes in hip hop. As change and evolution is inevitable, especially as hip hop seems to resonate with the youth – of course they’re gonna wanna put their own spin on it, and so they should. But that doesn’t mean it’s only for the kids. As long as there is a hunger, a need for self expression, there will be rhymes over beats by the original hip hoppers of Perth – Full Circle. We’re back, older, wiser, with character. https://www.mixcloud.com/Pokerone/0-scratch-100-fm-perth-1988-dj-triple-d-with-mc-sugar-ray-mc-silk-and-mc-snowfresh-side-a/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGUArUgOEd4

DJ Zeke
Coming from the outbacks of western Australia, DJ Zeke is a humble but confident warrior. He was exposed to djing from the young age of 13 on a couple of old dusty belt driven decks…”they were horrible” he stated, “but it is what the music department the skool decided to buy”. He was however very thankful as this was the beginning of his journey. He was given his first gig at the local youth group through his high school. He had no choice but to use cdj’s as he could not afford vinyl at the time at the age of 15. However he still “rocked the joint”. Zeke entered a local dj competition at the age of 17 and won his first residency at a club. This was when he met his true inspiration DJ Junior (A DMC Icon and Veteran in WA). “Seeing the things he could do with vinyl I naturally decided to sell my cdj’s and try my luck at this turntable wizardry… Turned out I wasn’t bad at this scratching business”. Zeke then went into solitude for a while constantly practicing to better himself and found that he was becoming more of an artist than a person who just plays music.
After a while he moved to the big city “Perth” or as he calls it the “Big Apple” where he met more turntablists and more musically inclined people and played a lot of gigs. In 2007, Zeke decided to enter the DMC DJ Competition and try his luck, and to his disbelief he won! He went to the national finals in Melbourne and did not earn a placing but said that he “learned a lot about the industry”. The following year he persisted and took out second place in the Australian Finals which gave him the title of “2008 Australian Vice DMC DJ Champion”. In 2009 Zeke finally earned the title Australasian DJ Champion at the IDA Australasian DJ Championships, Auckland Zew Zealand.
This is your first Australian/australasian title, how are you feeling at the moment?
Absolutely great 🙂 winning this title has really inspired me to keep pushing myself further, it’s a beautiful thing. Who or what inspired you to become a battle dj?
An Australian Turntablist veteran by the name of DJ Junior What was your first battle and how do you think you went?
My first battle was in 2007 DMC, I think I did exceptionally well considering it was my first battle, I won the state title then went for the Australian but was unsuccessful haha.

What’s your battlescars to date?
2007 State DMC Champ
2008 State DMC Champ
2008 3rd Place IDA Competition
Australian Vice DMC Champ
Australasian IDA DJ Champ How do you find being isolated in perth with no influences and other turntablists to inspire you and How do you come up with new material for battle routines?
I find the isolation to be very good, it forces me to research on everybody else on the internet and see where everybody is at on a world level instead of just the local Perth scale. I am very self motivated and I find my inspiration through many things. haha alot of the new material I come up with in my routines is by accident, and then I elaborate on those accidents lol.

Tell us about your new scratch you invented this year and how it evolved.
ah yes! The scratch is called “Dead Flazars”. It originally came from the Tazar scratch, and I have added a few different elements to it which has made it a very kool/unique sounding scratch. I posted this scratch up on the QSU (Qbert Skratch University) and Qbert loved it and called me a genius! This was a great experience!

How often do you practice leading up to a battle?
haha its not “practice”, its having “fun”… so yes I have “fun” all the time!

How do you mentally prepare yourself before stepping up on stage?
Pretty much by thinking to myself “just have fun out there”, I dont like arrogance. We get alot of adrenalin when we perform, so once you harness that adrenalin you can use it for you instead of against you. How did you find the standards of the competetors at the finals this year?
The standard of the competitors was a mix of advanced to intermediate, so all in all it was a nice mixture.

How would you compare the new zealand turntablist scene to the australian turntablist scene?
The quality of the dj’s in New Zealand are quite high, almost every dj I met there could scratch really well and over here in Australia its not like that at all.

The final round was pretty close, in your opinion what do you think made you the winner?
Not to sound bad or arrogant or anything, in my honest opinion, my strongest point is my skratch, and Impact’s strongest point was his juggle. If you focus on both of the strong points you will see that my scratching is of world level or higher (which I have been told many times) and Impacts juggles are strong but not anything different or unique. How do you think you will place in the world finals?
I hope to get a placing!

Anyone you got your eye on?
haha everybody! Who are your all time favorite battle DJs?
Craze, Rafik, Netik, Tigerstyle, Troubl’. Top 5 Battle Breaks.
Most Scratch Science and Dirtstyle Breaks, Japanese are great too

Top 5 all time tracks.
Emalkay – Explicit
2 Live Crew – Shake that Ass
Marvin Gaye – Sexual Healing
Passion Pit – Little Secrets
Michael Jackson Any tips on the upcoming battle DJs?
Everyone enjoy themselves and have fun! There seems to be less attendance at every battle each year. Where do you see this artform going and what do you think we can do to keep it alive?
I think educating the punters more about what it is with showcases in cities and workshops that the public can just see and even try for themselves. I think too many people are becoming intimidated by the artform, more turntablists need to share and put things out in the open in a friendly manner without scaring people away.

What are your thoughts on turntablism and technology. Eg. The show category?
Awesome stuff! Things evolve and this is where you see it!

Do you think you will continue to defend your title next year ?
Yes Do you do any club djing and where can we see you play?
Alot of summer festivals here in Western australia Perth which have all sorts of international artists playing as well. I am with a local label also here in Perth which you can check out at http://paperchain.squarespace.com/ Any projects coming up?
Just continuing to better myself and endlessly evolving!
Any Shoutouts?
Thanks goes out to: Mum Dad, and older bro’s, my lovely girl, George Scicluna, Shaggi, Beni Chill, Kit Pop, Paper Chain People, Roberto, Javier, Junior, LxD… and all of thos who have supported me.

He has performed around Sydney with Jazz bands and Hip Hop crews focusing on using the turntable as an instrument. having placed 3rd in last years Wax Wars he now plans on taking the title with his heavy ass hands. If you havent seen this guy cut it up, make viewing his videos a priority today starting with the one below. To be honest i dont really know much about this guy except his hands are pretty fuckin amazing especially his stab reflexs. He came very close to taking out Subway in the IDA scratch championships, so close it took a bit of time for the judges to work it out. That all being said i was going to go with sydney pioneering dj this round (no disrespect – all love) but felt this guy needed to be mentioned because as you can tell from the video link below he is truly gifted on the cut. Hot Cheddar
Hot Cheddar is a Tasmanian based Producer/DJ hailing from Hobart’s Eastern Shore. Hot Cheddar began creating music as a young lad playing guitar and piano before moving his unique style into the digital side of music as he began messing with abelton and found a love for the versatility that can be found within electronic music. In Early 2013, after years of experimenting with his own sounds, he and two old friends from primary school formed the Hobart based Hip-Hop group, ‘The Dirturtles’ and then went on to produce, mix and master the groups debut self release ‘the out of the shell EP’ and play their first of many shows at Marion Bay Falls Festival on the local stage. The three have since been very busy playing a variety of headline and killer support slots (Seth Sentry, Akouo, Cormega) whilst also finding time to record their second indepentent release, the Crossroads EP. Hot Cheddar is renowned for his originality, with almost all of his beats and production being entirely from either his guitar, keyboard or just straight off the top off the noggin, a great example of a Hot Cheddar production is his work on the song ‘Back Then ft. Carla Cuzzucoli) by the Dirturtles, which is a signature acoustic/hip-hop vibe that Chedda loves to throw in the mix. You can listen to more of Hot Cheddar’s stuff over at soundcloud and all reviews here on uneartherd are much appreciated! “He can DJ your acid rave or serenade the family campfire with no more than six strings – there is not much the man can not do.” – Primitive Emcee, Dirturtles.

Ushering in a wave of new school rap for Australian Hip Hop fans, Peezo is findingneutrality somewhere between modern-day American sounds and local legend like The Hilltop Hoods and Drapht. 2014 is shaping up as a big one for the former Byron Bay local, with the first installment of his eagerly anticipated Old School Futuristic series My last name is Peters and my friends used to call me ‘Peezy’ before I was really trying to rap for a career. I was in love with this girl who wanted to be a tattoo artist, so I let her tattoo my nickname on my toes and it really stuck. Prowla – from Melbourne. First release in 1994. PROWLA – ‘MONEY WALKS’
One of the crown jewels in any serious vinyl collectors collection and for a million good reasons. I heard a bunch of earlier tapes by Prowla at house parties but never owned one so forking out for this wax was easy. The delivery/production still miles ahead of it’s time and an instant trip to the rainy Melbourne city scape. – Funkoars https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXZCaMTc7OQ&feature=youtu.be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1PYWexQRMc I have known Prowls for ages , since the early 90’s . I guess Prowls knew I had some dope beats . I did cuts for his first album too and now he is a better scratcher and cutter than me, ha-ha. He used to watch me scratch and cut and study me cutting and ask me how did I do that etc. He learnt quick and he’s a dope Dj now too. – Johnny Idem <img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-93717" src="https://australianhiphopdirectory.com/wp-content/uploads/prowla-cd-2-225x300.jpg" alt=" width="225" height="300" /> <img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-93718" src="https://australianhiphopdirectory.com/wp-content/uploads/prowla-cd-1-300x225.jpg" alt=" width="300" height="225" />

RKS
Trio consisting of 2 emcees and a dj. On the now defunct RebelBase Records. RAID EK is Eddie Rasguido. He was raised in the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, where Hip Hop is the staple diet of most teenagers. How did you get into the scene, tell us about Rocksonics?
Rocksonics was my first hip hop group, we used to tag the name up but we shortened it to RKS to make it easier. We were shit at graffiti so we focused on music (After such a long time we’re hoping to get out an RKS ep early next year). From those early hip hop days I then got into some electronic music and ended up at breaks and it’s all kinda gone from there. You tasted success early in your career with a 2nd place in the group category in the DMC championships, how did you take it to the next level?
Ha ha, I don’t think I’ve taken it to the next level. That was a very long time ago. Some of the DJs today like J-Red are crazy; the stuff they do is awesome. But, from DJing i did get into production and I think that’s a kinda progression from DJing.

The Battlehoggs
Kansel & Dj Juice The Battlehoggs are a championship DJ crew doing good things for oz hip-hop and who are labeled as pioneers of the Aussie mixtape scene.DJ Kansel started the group in 2000 in ADL who has produced a collective group of some of the country’s first mixtapes to have featured Australian artists. Kansel’s Battlehogg tapes established a strong following within the underground and later got a deal with Shogun Distribution in 2007 to release ‘Battlehoggs Official Mixtape Series Volume 1 – Hosted by Trials [Funkoars]’. Following the huge success of their first national release, Battlehoggs released Vol.2 – Hosted by Brad Strut [Lyrical Commission] in 2008. Both tapes received huge props by both the fans and artists for uniting the states for the first time since the early days of ‘Culture Of Kings’. Hoggs is the home for all aussie artists (signed/not signed) and the Battlehogg tapes will remain to be a platform to feature oz hip-hop in it’s entirety. DJ Kansel has established his name in the US working with various artists for the ‘Oz-Tex Connect Series’ also working exclusively with Brooklyn’s Red Café for the ‘All Frames of the Game Mixtape’. DJ Kansel won the Australian Scratch DJ title at Scribble Jam in 2006 winning him a trip to the states to compete and experienced the grind of the rap industry in Houston, Texas. The mixtape trend down under has increased significantly in the past decade having influenced the recent start up of Hussletapes.com allowing all aussie artists to promote their music together online to a nationwide hip-hop market. https://www.reverbnation.com/artist/video/9423958
