KOI CHILD are a seven piece hip-hop/jazz collective from Fremantle, Western Australia. The group formed in 2014 after a chance collaboration between three piece hip-hop quartet Childs Play and improvisational jazz quartet Kashikoi. The improvisational jam caught the eye of Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker which saw the act being invited to open for them the following week. The band continued their relationship with Parker and released their debut self-titled album with him at the helm via Warner Music Group in March 2016 to critical acclaim debuting at #6 on the ARIA Charts. The album was nominated for ‘Best Urban Album’ at the 2016 ARIA Awards and won Best Album at the 2016 WAM Awards. The album has received strong international radio play (triple J, Beats 1 Radio w/ Ebro Darden, BBC Radio 1 from Zane Lowe, KCRW among others) and has received praise online from Pitchfork, The Fader, Noisey, Earmilk & Rolling Stone among others. The band also featured in Spotify’s ‘Spotlight on 2016 Australia & New Zealand’.
The band has sold out headline tours across Australia, supported Tame Impala on their ‘Currents’ national tour and have supported acts such as Hiatus Kaiyote, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Bloc Party among others. The band have also performed many prestigious Australian festivals such as Golden Plains, Groovin’ The Moo, Strawberry Fields and the St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival in 2017. They have also just returned from their first US tour around SXSW, including packed rooms in LA, Austin, NYC and a sold-out end of tour show in Philadelphia.
The band will spend the rest of 2016 working on their sophomore record due for release in the first half of 2017.
